Images from Breakfast at Tiffany’s are branded into our collective memory: we can see Audrey Hepburn stepping out of that cab on the corner of 57th and 5th, and picture her again with George Peppard, wrapped in a kiss as the rain pours around them. Behind those iconic images is the incredible journey of what it took to transform Truman Capote’s “unfilmable” novella into a motion picture classic. Following the film, author Sam Wasson will reveal little known facts about Breakfast at Tiffany’s (including how Truman Capote desperately wanted Marilyn Monroe for the leading role, and how Hepburn herself felt very conflicted about balancing her role as Holly Golightly with her real-life role as a mother) and immerse us in the America of the late fifties before Woodstock and birth control, when a not-so-virginal girl raised eyebrows across the country, changing fashion, film, and sex, for good. USA, 1961, 115 min.

Sam Wasson was born in Los Angeles but left the city to study film at Wesleyan University, and then went on to do a Masters in Film at USC. His books, A Splurch in the Kisser: The Movies of Blake Edwards and the forthcoming Paul on Mazursky, offer definitive studies of each director’s life and work. He calls L.A. home again, though L.A. rarely returns his calls.
Praise for Fifth Avenue, 5 AM: Audrey Hepburn,
Breakfast at Tiffany’s and the Dawn of the Modern Woman
“A brilliant chronicle of the creation of Breakfast at Tiffany's. Wasson has woven
the whole so deftly that it reads like a compulsively page-turning novel.
This is a memorable achievement.” —Peter Bogdanovich
“Audrey Hepburn as the startlingly amoral heroine of Breakfast at Tiffany’s
dances through the pages of Sammy Wasson’s portrait of a movie and a little black
dress that were game changers at the dawn of the sixties. Both juicy and informative,
Fifth Avenue, 5 AM provides the inside story while giving Hepburn her due
as a true modern original.”—Molly Haskell, author of
Frankly, My Dear: Gone with the Wind Revisited
