We have reached a critical stage in the digital era where the Cinema Arts Centre must purchase digital projection equipment for its three theaters in order to continue operation.
YES! I choose to make a fully tax-deductible donation so the Cinema Arts Centre may purchase digital projection equipment and remain a vital cultural force for years to come. I understand that 100% of my gift will be designated to the purchase of digital projection equipment.
Since its founding in 1973, the thousands of films the Cinema Arts Centre has presented have primarily been film, shot and stored on celluloid film stock. As you know, these days are coming to a close. For the past several years, the use of digital technologies to capture, deliver and project motion pictures has accelerated. Soon, new motion pictures will not be produced and distributed on film at all. In 2013, the 35mm projection system will become obsolete. While the Cinema Arts Centre will continue to present some 35mm prints, such as restored classics and silent films, it must be prepared to present first-run features and new independent cinema in the digital format.
The Cinema Arts Centre must raise approximately $200,000 to purchase of digital projection equipment for its three theaters.
Large multiplexes have the advantage of great buying power and favor in the industry – studios make most of their money from the big blockbusters that run in the big commercial theaters and are inclined to offer incentives to the commercial multiplexes to convert to digital projection that they are not inclined to offer to small art houses across the country. Local, not-for-profit, independent cinemas such as the Cinema Arts Centre must turn to the community.
The Cinema Arts Centre is a vital part of our cultural landscape. Cinema programs have enriched the lives of our residents in so many ways. When the Cinema first began, the films that were shown could not be seen anywhere else on Long Island. Today, while it’s possible to see some of the films we show in your home or another venue, what cannot be found anywhere else is the deep sense of community and binding sense of purpose that grows from our programs and our membership. Members, new and long-standing, tell us continuously how much they value their Cinema Arts Centre experiences.
The Cinema is also a strong contributor to our local economy, helping to make our area a great place to live. It has been calculated that over $7 million is spent in our immediate area each year because we are here. The Cinema is an important local employer, helps to promote area merchants, and uses local venders whenever possible. Especially in today’s world, such an impact makes a critical difference in our quality of life.
The Cinema Arts Centre, and our membership—the cultural movement that has helped to drive our growth and community impact—have been key players in building and shaping this community. The Cinema Arts Centre’s Digital Cinema Campaign is your opportunity in this pivotal moment to ensure that we remain a vital cultural force for years to come.
Update: Thanks to tremendous community support, we have only a small gap in funding and are planning to proceed with the purchase and installation of our New Digital Projection Equipment according to timeline.
