Philharmonica of Poznan, Poland Steve Kowarsky, bassoon
Jorge Amorim, percussion Sergio Brandão, bass
On November 8, pianist/composer/singer
Luiz Simas will perform again at the Cinema Arts Centre
with his new show "The Return of the Carioca Way,"
this time with his quintet and an unusual line-up: piano/voice,
flute, bassoon, percussion, and bass.
The program for this concert is an expansion on the
program given earlier this year at the Weill Recital
Hall at Carnegie Hall and at the Polish Consulate in
Manhattan, and includes a wide range of Brazilian music,
from choro and Baião to bossa-nova, Brazilian
classical music and Brazilian jazz. It will feature
Villa-Lobos' "Bachianas Brasileiras #5," Ernesto
Nazareth's "Odeon," Luiz Simas' "The
Legend of the Enchanted Lagoon" (a mini-symphony),
and the unusual "Twisted Samba." Also in the
program is a beautiful medley of Jobim songs (bossa-nova),
as well as other bossa-nova pieces which the ensemble
will be playing for the first time.
The musicians in Luiz's group are Barbara Blonska, the
superb flute player with the Philharmonica of Poznan,
Poland, who performed with Mr. Simas last time he played
at CAC; great bassoonist Steve Kowarsky, a resident
of Long Island who met Luiz at CAC and who has performed
with him since then; percussionist and drummer Jorge
Amorim, a top Brazilian musician who was a sensation
at the Polish Consulate concert; and Sergio Brandão,
considered one of the finest Brazilian bass players
ever, and who has played all over the world.
Mr. Simas will be releasing at this concert his newest
cd entitled :Luiz Simas Live in New York City,"
recorded live at the Polish Consulate earlier this year,
with Barbara Blonska, Steve Kowarsky, and Jorge Amorim.
This cd includes many of the pieces which will be performed
at the concert.
