| REMEMBER
ME, MY LOVE
This incredibly moving film chronicles the disintegration
of an Italian family as it collectively undergoes an
identity crisis. You may recognize yourself in one or
more of the characters: father Carlo, who gave up writing
to become a company man and is trapped in a passionless
marriage with his wife Guilia, once a talented actress
and now a bored teacher; feisty teenage daughter Valentina,
who will do anything to become a star; and socially
awkward teenage son Paolo, who feels stifled and isolated.
Even though they are all individually attempting to
reach
personal goals, the bickering household is seething
with tension, and the spark that detonates this power
keg is Carlo's affair with his old flame and muse Alessia.
Gabriele Muccino's bittersweet film could have played
like a dreary soap opera but instead is a compelling
story elevated by its sharp dialogue, rich characterizations,
and stylish, occasionally frantic camerawork that amplifies
the anxiety of the
characters. Insightful and intelligent, Remember Me,
My Love explores the consequences of the life choices
we make and the ultimate cost of our dreams and desires.
