It is certain there will be a second wave of deaths and illnesses due to the cataclysmic events of Sept. 11th. Tens of thousands of firefighters, police officers, iron workers, volunteers, and residents of Lower Manhattan were exposed to a vast array of toxic substances at the World Trade Center collapse. Coupled with the EPA’s broadcasting false assurances to the public, people returned to Lower Manhattan long before it was safe to do so. “The Toxic Clouds of 9/11” portrays the huge health problems such as asthma, cancer, neurological and autoimmune diseases that ruined the lives of many who lived or worked near Ground Zero. Medical researchers, along with victims of the aftermath of 9/11, describe how this travesty specifically demonstrates the direct relationship between a toxic environment and a multitude of diseases. Tens of thousands are now affected with debilitating illness. Many have already died. Our current laws do not protect us. We must support environmental health research and demand regulatory legislation to protect us.
